Q&A: Is a proposal that is only partially HP ok? [Formal Programming]

Nicole, on our Facebook Page, asked: If a paper proposal is partially HP, is it still acceptable? Ascendio: Absolutely! With closed canon and many Harry Potter fans enjoying and participating in other fandoms, we welcome and encourage those with multi-fandom or cross-fandom interests to propose programming. This might be a comparison of a character in Harry Potter to one in another series (ie: Hermione vs. Bella or Katniss), or a discussion of themes within another series (such as The Hunger Games, Supernatural, Merlin, etc.!) and how they are similar/different to HP. Or it could even be a proposal covering how Harry Potter FANS react to and participate in other fandoms, especially YA and sci-fi/fantasy fandoms. There are many possibilities!

Beth Revis is going to be at Ascendio! Have you read her NYT best-selling book, Across the Universe? (if you haven’t, you must!)
Want to meet Beth, discuss her books AND geek out about Harry Potter with her? Beth is a huge Harry Potter fan and a rising star on the YA scene, and we are super excited to have her at Ascendio! Beth will be doing a reading/signing/book club, and will also sit on several panels relating to publishing and Harry Potter topics.

Ascendio is adding a Wrock Day!

We know you’ve been waiting to hear about our Wrock plans, and we’ve been quietly and excited plotting behind the scenes. Now we can finally announce that Ascendio will be adding an entire day of programming — and a Wrock Day!

Now Ascendio is officially Thursday - Sunday, with Thursday playing host to a series of Wrock concerts. So far we’ve confirmed that Undesirable #1, The Butterbeer Experience, Gryffindor Common Room Rejects, Carpe Geekdom will be there, and our IP chair Mallory is talking with even more bands!

Even better — Wrock fans who just want Wrock, or are on a budget, can enjoy our Wrock Day for just $50 Day Registration. If you have a Full Registration or Merlin’s Circle, or were waffling on getting either, both registrations will automatically include Thursday Wrock Day, as well as any other Thursday programming we add (currently we are brainstorming some fun, non-Wrock related informal programming for Thursday). Want to know more? Click here! Want to jump right to Registration? Click here!

Reblog is you love Wizard Rock, are coming to Ascendio or just want to spread the word!

We’ve extended our $200 rate for a Full Registration through Cyber Monday! (November 28)

We have more than 200 registrants, but in the spirit of holiday giving, just couldn’t bear to raise the registration rate yet. Buy one for yourself, or get one as a Christmas gift for a loved one (parents? WINK WINK)!

Don’t forget, with the Full Registration, you get all four days of programming (Thursday through Sunday!), two feasts, the Thursday Wrock concert, the Saturday night ball and access to everything else! Plus, you’ll be able to buy a ticket to our exclusive Park event, as soon as tickets go on sale (soon, we promise!). Unless you’re a baller and go for Merlin’s Circle (which, literally, gets you EVERYTHING, including the Park event ticket already included), a Full Registration is the best way to enjoy Ascendio. And until the price increases (which, woefully, it eventually must!), if you get a $200 Full Reg, it’s the same cost as getting day passes for Thursday, Friday and Saturday… but comes with two meals!

Lev Grossman, TIME Magazine’s book critic and tech writer, is the newest special guest to join the Ascendio programming roster. Mr. Grossman’s best-selling novels, “The Magicians” (2009) and “The Magician King” (2011) have been called “The Catcher in the Rye for devotees of alternative universes…” (Chicago Tribune) and “Harry Potter for grown-ups” (The Guardian).
Lev has been TIME magazine’s resident writer on books and tech issues since 2002 and posts all over the Internet, including Time.com, his personal blog at levgrossman.com, and @Leverus on Twitter. You may have read his 2010 TIME Person of the Year story on Mark Zuckerberg, or his 2011 piece on fanfiction, which featured Harry Potter fandom. Lev also edits TIME’s annual Best Inventions and 10 Ideas issues and pioneered their coverage of video games, blogs, viral videos, Facebook, and webcomics like Penny Arcade and Achewood.
At Ascendio, he will not only be doing a reading and signing of his books, but will lead Formal Programming sessions on Pottermore from the perspective of a gamer, a parent and a technologist, and give exclusive insights into his 2005 interview with J.K. Rowling and his 2011 article on fanfiction. Lev is no stranger to Harry Potter conventions — in 2009, Lev was a special guest at HPEF’s 6th event, Azkatraz.
