Azkatraz 2009 - Auction by hpef on Flickr.
T-Shirt Contest! Calling all artists! We’ve got an opportunity for fame and glory…at least among Ascendio attendees. We are looking for designs for the official Ascendio t-shirt, just as we did in the lead-up to past events, including Nimbus 2003 and Azkatraz. You can see a selection of designs for past HPEF events in our CafePress store (still under construction), but don’t feel bound by any styles or fonts we’ve used before. Instead, since the Ascendio theme is “Flights of Fancy” please let that inspire your creativity. A few guidelines: No larger than 8.5 x 11″ in finished digital form; must be at least 300 dpi The artwork and text must be rated PG-13 or lower Design should be single-color (for a one-color imprint on blue or purple). Glow-in-the-dark & metallic imprinting is an option, if that inspires you! Artwork should include the following elements: the word “Ascendio”, ‘HPEF Presents’ and the event dates (July 12-15, 2012) and “Ascendio 2012″ should be in this font: Jellyka Western Princess (http://www.dafont.com/jellyka-western-princess.font) Any characters included in the art should not be identified by name. We strongly encourage using generic magical creatures and characters rather than content directly from the films or books. As our theme for Ascendio focuses on flight – metaphorical, literal, animalian and human – we encourage incorporation of those aspects. Do not use any of the official “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” artwork or trademark. Submissions will be accepted until midnight (EST) November 30, 2011 at pr@hp2012.org. Any questions can be forwarded to that address as well, or posted here. The artist who submits the winning design will win a single-day admission ticket to Universal Orlando Islands of Adventure which can be used during Ascendio. High-res

GODDESS INTERRUPTED (3/27/2012)
Kate Winters has won immortality.
But if she wants a life in the Underworld with Henry, she’ll have to fight for it.
Becoming immortal wasn’t supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she’s as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he’s becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate’s coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.
As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.
Henry’s first wife, Persephone.

TEAM ASCENDIO is enchanted to announce that Aimée Carter, author of The Goddess Test and next January’s Goddess Interrupted (both from Harlequin TEEN), will be attending in July. Aimée has written fanfic and original stories for nearly fifteen years, and has long participated in the Harry Potter fandom; she was on staff for POAIMAXNYC in June of 2004. Aimée will be doing readings and signings at Ascendio, and participating in panels on writing, including the differences between writing fanfic and writing in a self-created universe. On her website, Aimee wrote that fanfiction is:

“how I learned how to write, and there is nothing like the kind of feedback you get online from total strangers who just want to read a good story. Talk about toughening you up. Most of what I wrote was Harry Potter fan fiction from roughly 2000 and on, but I did dabble in Hanson fan fiction before then.
Yes, I am a geek and totally proud of it.”

I adore the way fan fiction writers engage with and critique source texts, by manipulating them and breaking their rules. Some of it is straight-up homage, but a lot of [fan fiction] is really aggressive towards the source text. One tends to think of it as written by total fanboys and fangirls as a kind of worshipful act, but a lot of times you’ll read these stories and it’ll be like ‘What if Star Trek had an openly gay character on the bridge?’ And of course the point is that they don’t, and they wouldn’t, because they don’t have the balls, or they are beholden to their advertisers, or whatever. There’s a powerful critique, almost punk-like anger, being expressed there—which I find fascinating and interesting and cool.

Happy Birthday, Severus Snape! In honor of today, we’re posting some of our favorite Snape-isms from HPEF cons!

It’s so celebratory of the Harry Potter world. Like, it just kind of encompasses that feel of how great Hogwarts is and - it’s also, for me, like, doing the show - because I graduated from college a year before we did the show. So when I went back to go help with the show, it was like I was going back to school. And like, outside of school, because I live in Los Angeles, I just don’t know very many people, and I don’t get out much or anything because it’s so expensive. So it’s really like you feel like Harry Potter, because it’s like, geez, when you’re not in school, it sucks! It sucks because you don’t have any friends! You just are sick of it, and you’re waiting around. And it feels like - it’s like such a celebration of this community, and of school in general. It’s like, that’s kind of like an appeal of just Harry Potter in general, that it’s like this celebration of all the great things about childhood and going to school, and everything. Because while you’re in school you’re like ‘ugh, school sucks,’ but then when you think about it, it’s just such a great community and you get to see all your friends that you love, and that’s what Goin’ Back to Hogwarts is all about. And I think people really connect with that.

6 Made Up Nerd Words That Made it to Common Usage, and 8 That Should

heidi8:

As a geek or a nerd, you get introduced to new words all the time! Science fiction and fantasy are practically in the business, not just of creating new place names, which is practically a given; but also of making new nouns in general, new verbs, and new adjectives. And while some of those concepts might not be particularly useful outside of their fictional setting, others have, over time, been accepted wholly by the English of reality. With some of these, we’ve forgotten that they were ever words in fiction to begin with.

MUGGLE is word #3! But they focus too much on Nancy Stouffer, despite her “pattern of intentional bad faith” - when they could have nattered more on how the term Muggle is now used in ordinary parlance.

Linguists, what do you think?

Fandom-coined terminology and fandom-appropriated language are terrific subjects for formal programming proposals at Ascendio. If you’re interested in presenting such a paper or being on a panel, let us know via the Formal Programming Submission Form

Fwiw, tweets #2005 - 2012 by @HPEF will use a virtual time turner to look back at the HPEF cons of each of those years, so check them out, and RT if you attended The Witching Hour, Lumos, Prophecy, Portus, Azkatraz or Infinitus (tweet #2004 was about Nimbus because we RT-ed something from the amazing Lena Gabrielle as #2003).

If you’re interested in helping out with Ascendio, there’s something terrific for you to do in Orlando in July. Remember, you need a registration for the day(s) that you want to volunteer, except that everyoneis invited to help out on Wednesday when we stuff registration packs, to work the door at the To the Manor Ball, and on Sunday for the Auction and Raffle. Some of the areas where you can help include:

  • Security (you get a cool t-shirt!)
  • Programming Prefects (essentially room monitors for Formal Programming sessions)
  • Common Room staff (help monitor our Common Room… and enjoy the festivities at the same time!)
  • Registration desk
  • Meet & Greet desk (love to give directions/explain things to people? This is for you!)
  • Decorations (on site, this includes decorating before the ball, and more!)

Click here fill out the Volunteer Form and be placed in our Database; we’ll get in touch with you and put you on a team within a day or two. Ascendio is run entirely by volunteers. From the board and senior staff to the on-site volunteers, HPEF events wouldn’t be what they are without help and commitment from its attendees. By volunteering, you can help shape Ascendio, meet fellow fans before the symposium, and gain an insider’s viewpoint to event planning.

Plus, we’re having a reception or two for our volunteers, and if you help out onsite, you’re cordially invited!
